What we do
- Mold
That is the whole list. One trade, one region, and all of our attention on the part those companies treat as a line item.
There is nothing wrong with a large multi-service firm, and for a big insurance loss they are often the right call — they have the crews and the claims relationships.
But mold is mostly a diagnostic problem. Removing it is straightforward. Working out why a house in this climate is holding moisture is not, and the technician who arrives from a company like that may have been on a fire job yesterday and a driveway the week before.
What it costs in New Orleans
Written down here rather than held back until somebody is standing in your hallway.
| Job size | Price range | Typical New Orleans example |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | From $600 | A contained area — the back of a closet, one bathroom, a patch of plaster |
| Small | $1,000 – $2,500 | One room, or a limited area where some plaster or sheetrock has to come out |
| Medium | $2,500 – $5,000 | Several rooms, or mold that has gotten into wall cavities or the HVAC |
| Large | $5,000 and up | Extensive growth, major demolition, or a whole-house treatment |
In the older housing stock, the swing is usually plaster and lath: it holds moisture longer than sheetrock and it costs more to open and put back, so a room here can price above the same room in a post-war house.
Our minimum is $600. Most mold companies set theirs at $1,000 to $1,500. A small problem should not be priced like a big one.

Older houses hide it differently
Much of the housing here is old, and a lot of it is raised rather than sitting on slab. That changes where moisture goes and how long it takes to show.
A raised house has air moving under the floor, which is generally good — until the underside of the subfloor is what stays damp, and nobody looks there. Older framing, plaster, and generations of renovation layered on top of each other mean water can travel a long way inside a wall before it stains anything you can see.
That is the part most mold technicians are not trained for. Certification teaches a procedure for after mold is found: contain, cut out, spray, vacuum, run an air scrubber. It does not teach how a house is built, how plumbing was run in it, or how the last three renovations changed the way water moves through it.
Water can enter at one point and appear thirty feet away, on a different wall, in a different room. Find the stain instead of the source and the mold comes back, because nothing that caused it changed.
Before starting Mold Shield, our founder spent years as a superintendent for a residential homebuilder and as a project manager at a national restoration franchise. That construction background is why we trace the water first.
What we find causing it
Sometimes one failure does it alone. More often several moderate problems stack up until the house cannot keep ahead of the humidity — which is why people so often say nothing changed and then suddenly there was mold.
Air conditioning that cools without drying
The most common cause we find anywhere. Low or overcharged on refrigerant, no proper air balancing, restricted airflow, or oversized so it short-cycles. The house is cold and still feels damp.
An attic with no real ventilation
A working attic stays within 10 to 15°F of outside. One that cannot breathe sits at 140 to 150°F and drives moisture down into the rooms below.
The wrong air filter
A high-MERV filter restricts airflow across the coil, and that airflow is what removes moisture from the air. In this climate it can add five to ten percentage points of humidity on its own. We recommend MERV 4 or 5.
Slow leaks nobody chased
Not a burst pipe — that gets dealt with. The shower pan that failed months ago, the roof flashing that only leaks in a hard wind from one direction.
How the work goes
Free on-site inspection
No charge to have us look. Sometimes we find you do not need us, and we say so.
Trace the moisture first
Mold is the symptom. Leave the water and you will pay for the same job twice.
A written scope and a price
Both before anything starts.
Containment
Sealed and held under negative air pressure, so removing mold does not distribute it through the rest of the house.
Mold fogging or traditional remediation
Fogging for mold — dry fog, in the trade — reaches spaces that cannot be opened up, which often means less demolition. Traditional removal is right when material has to come out. We do both.
Correct the cause
Otherwise the rest was rented, not fixed.
One trade, done properly — and the rest handled
Ask it the way you would about anything else you were paying for: do you want the specialist, or the jack of all trades? A general restoration company runs water losses, fire, smoke, biohazard and mold. Mold is a line on the menu. Here it is the menu.
What that normally costs you is coordination — the specialist finishes their part and hands you a list of numbers to call. Not here. The master HVAC technicians, the ventilation specialist, the general contractors and the roofers are our partners, scheduled through us, so the job closes out as one job.
No markup on their work. The standard move is to sub the work out, add overhead and profit, and bill it as your own. We pass our partners' prices through as they are, and several of them discount for our customers on top of that.
Mold testing in New Orleans
Want lab numbers before anything else happens? That is a different license, and we will point you to it.
Under Louisiana law testing and remediation are two separate licensed activities, and a single company doing both on one property is a violation. The logic holds up: whoever writes the report should not be the one who profits from how long it is.
We do removal only. For sampling and identification we refer you out, and the result is worth more for it.
Common questions
How much does mold removal cost in New Orleans?
Our minimum is $600. Small projects generally run $1,000 to $2,500, medium projects $2,500 to $5,000, and larger jobs start at $5,000. Most mold remediation in Louisiana falls between $1,000 and $5,000. The evaluation that produces your number is free.
Should I use a specialist or a full-service restoration company?
For a large insurance loss involving water, fire and reconstruction together, a multi-service firm often makes sense — they have the crews and the claims relationships. For mold specifically, the hard part is diagnostic: working out why the house is holding moisture. That is where concentrating on one trade matters, because it decides whether the problem comes back.
Do you work on older and raised houses?
Yes, and a large part of the housing here is exactly that. Raised construction changes where moisture collects — the underside of a subfloor is a common place for it to sit unnoticed — and older framing with layers of renovation on top means water can travel a long way inside a wall before anything shows.
Does homeowners insurance cover mold?
Sometimes, and it usually depends on what caused the water. A sudden accidental event such as a burst pipe is more likely to be covered than mold from a long-term leak or from humidity, and many policies cap mold coverage at a set figure. We can document what we find in a form that is useful for a claim.
You are based in Baton Rouge — do you actually come to New Orleans?
Yes. We work the I-10 and I-12 corridor from Lafayette through to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and the New Orleans metro is part of that. The evaluation is free here the same as anywhere else in the service area.
Do you charge for the inspection?
No. Charging to show up means people wait until it is worse.

We cover the city and the metro area including Metairie, and across the lake to Covington, Abita Springs and Slidell — along with Baton Rouge and the capital region. Upriver in Jefferson Parish, we also handle mold removal in Kenner.
