In Baton Rouge, the problem is not finding a mold company
It is a big market. Search for mold removal here and you will get franchise offices, national brands, lead-generation sites that sell your phone number on to three companies, and a directory listing or two. Everyone looks equally credentialed on a search results page.
The hard part is working out which of them will actually find why your house is wet.
Four questions that separate them quickly
1. Is the person actually doing the work mold certified? Louisiana requires only one certified person per company, and it is often someone who never attends a job. "The company is certified" is a different answer, and they know it.
2. How will you contain the area? You want sealing and negative air pressure. Without containment, disturbing mold spreads it into rooms that were fine.
3. What do you think is causing the moisture? No answer means no plan, and it will come back.
4. What is the price and what is it based on? Before work starts, in writing.

Ask us those four. We would rather be judged on the answers than on how long the phone number has been on a truck.
What mold removal costs in Baton Rouge
Here are the numbers. You should not have to sit through a sales visit to find out roughly what you are looking at.
| Size of job | Cost | What is usually involved |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | From $600 | A single contained area — a closet, part of a wall, one bathroom |
| Small | $1,000 – $2,500 | One room, or a limited area with some material removal |
| Medium | $2,500 – $5,000 | Multiple rooms, or mold in wall cavities or in the HVAC system |
| Large | $5,000 and up | Widespread growth, significant demolition, whole-home treatment |
What moves a Baton Rouge job up the table is almost always the same two things: how much material has to be cut out to reach the back of the growth, and whether the air handler has been circulating it.
Our minimum is $600. Most mold companies set theirs at $1,000 to $1,500. A small problem should not be priced like a big one.
Two calculators, published price ranges, and no email address required to see the answer.
Anyone can remove it. Fewer can tell you why it was there.
A mold certification is a course about the after: contain the area, cut the material out, treat it, vacuum, run a scrubber. Technicians who hold one can do that properly, and it is also the entire syllabus.
It teaches nothing about how a house was built — where the supply lines run, how framing carries water, what an attic sitting at a hundred and forty degrees does to the ceilings underneath it.
Water does not surface where it enters. It can come in at one point and appear thirty feet away, on a different wall, in a different room. Chase the stain instead of the source and the mold is removed, you pay for it, and it comes back — because nothing that caused it changed.
Before starting Mold Shield, our founder spent years as a superintendent for a residential homebuilder and as a project manager at a national restoration franchise. In Baton Rouge that matters, because we are working on everything from post-war brick to houses finished last year, and they do not fail the same way.
What we keep finding in Baton Rouge homes
Sometimes it is one obvious failure. More often it is several moderate problems that stacked up until the house could not keep ahead of the humidity — which is why so many people tell us nothing changed and then suddenly there was mold. Across 75 homes sampled from our quote records, 66 had two or more at once — see what causes mold in South Louisiana homes.
An air conditioner that is not dehumidifying
The most common thing we find. Low or overcharged on refrigerant, no proper air balancing, restricted airflow through the unit, or simply oversized so it cools fast and shuts off before it removes moisture. The house is cold and still feels damp.
An attic running 40 degrees too hot
A working attic stays within 10 to 15°F of the outdoor temperature. One with no real ventilation sits at 140 to 150°F, pushes moisture down into the living space, and makes the air conditioner fight conditions it was never sized for.
The wrong filter in the return
A high-MERV filter restricts airflow across the coil, and airflow is what lets the coil pull water out of the air. In this climate the wrong filter can add five to ten percentage points of humidity by itself. We recommend MERV 4 or 5.
A slow leak that got put off
Not a burst pipe — those get dealt with immediately. The ones that turn into mold are the shower pan that failed months ago, the supply line weeping behind a vanity, the roof flashing nobody chased.
How the work goes
Free on-site inspection
We come and look at no charge. Sometimes we find you do not need us, and we say so.
Trace the moisture, not just the mold
Mold is a symptom. Leave the water source and it returns, and you have paid twice.
A written scope and a price
Both before anything begins, and nothing begins until you have agreed to them.
Containment
The area is sealed and held under negative air pressure so spores are not distributed through the rest of the house.
Mold fogging or traditional remediation
We do both. Mold fogging — dry fog, as the trade calls it — reaches spaces that cannot be opened up, which often means less demolition and a lower total repair bill. Traditional removal is right when material has to physically come out.
Correct the cause
Otherwise the rest was rented, not fixed.
Mold is all we do — and we can still handle the whole job
Those sound contradictory. They are not, and the difference matters when it is your house.
We only do mold. No water, fire, storm or reconstruction divisions competing for attention. But mold is rarely only a mold problem — something made the house wet, and something has to put it back together afterwards.
So instead of handing you a list of people to call, we bring in master HVAC technicians, an attic ventilation specialist, general contractors and roofers, and coordinate it through one point of contact.
And you are not paying a markup for that. The standard practice in this industry is to take a subcontractor's bid, add ten to forty percent as overhead and profit, submit it as your own price, then sub the work out anyway. We do not — you pay our partners' prices, and several of them discount further for our customers.
Mold testing in Baton Rouge
Testing is not one thing. Depending on what is actually going on it might be air sampling, surface swabs, tape lifts, a wall cavity check, or something else entirely — and most people calling about it have no way of knowing which one their situation calls for. That is fine. That is the point of asking.
Tell us what is happening and we will get you to the right people for whatever kind of testing it needs. We have worked alongside the same assessors for years, and part of what we do is guide people through the whole project rather than just our piece of it.
Testing and remediation are separately licensed in Louisiana, and it is a violation for one company to hold both roles on the same property — a rule that exists because the company finding the mold should not be the one billing to remove it.
We do the removal. Testing goes to an independent assessor.
Common questions
How much does mold removal cost in Baton Rouge?
Our minimum is $600. Small projects generally run $1,000 to $2,500, medium projects $2,500 to $5,000, and larger jobs start at $5,000. Most mold remediation in Louisiana falls between $1,000 and $5,000, and the evaluation that produces your number is free.
How do I tell one mold company from another here?
Ask whether the person actually doing the work is mold certified, how the area will be contained, what they think is causing the moisture, and what the price is based on. Those four answers separate companies faster than anything on a website. Louisiana only requires one certified person per company, so "we're certified" and "the technician in your house is certified" are different statements.
Are you a franchise?
No. Locally owned, working the I-10 and I-12 corridor, and mold is the only thing we do. That matters most for the diagnostic half of the job — figuring out where moisture is coming from in a humid climate — which is what determines whether the problem comes back.
Does homeowners insurance cover mold?
Sometimes, and it usually depends on what caused the water. A sudden accidental event such as a burst pipe is more likely to be covered than mold from a long-term leak or from humidity, and many policies cap mold coverage at a set figure. Check your policy — we can document what we find in a form that is useful for a claim.
What is mold fogging (dry fog remediation)?
A treatment that reaches into spaces that cannot easily be opened up, which often means less demolition and a lower total repair cost. It is also the tool for whole-house treatments — mold spores floating in the air, or a house that has been cross-contaminated because containment was lost while somebody opened up a wall. It is not right for every situation: where material has to physically come out, traditional remediation is the answer. We do both and will tell you which one your situation calls for and why.
Do you charge for the inspection?
No. Charging to show up means people wait until it is worse. We would rather look early.
